An article from Dr. Miller about COVID-19

It is important to note that there are no recognized cures for COVID-19, whether it is medicines or alternative therapies. This article will dive into natural and alternative recommendations and treatments to optimize the body’s immune system by decreasing inflammation. So, what we can do to give our body the best chance to heal given that, to-date, zero medications are known to be effective? I have said this many times in clinical practice: “If you get healthy enough, does it matter the name of the disease?” So again, what can we do? It turns out quite a few things. But first let’s look at why it’s important to decrease inflammation when it comes to COVID-19.

Dave Asprey, creator of bulletproof coffee and the bulletproof radio podcast, offers us an insight into how COVID-19 creates inflammation: “One of the things that it (COVID-19) does is damage people’s hearts, not just lungs. It seems to do this through increasing inflammation beyond what would be normal, what we call a cytokine storm. A cytokine storm happens when your immune system starts pumping out so many cytokine proteins that they start attacking healthy cells and causing a lot of inflammation.”

So how do we get healthy and decrease inflammation?

Get plenty of quality sleep

Deep sleep is the time the body heals and repairs.  The less this happens, the more inflammation our body has to fight. Optimal rest is between 6-8 hours of QUALITY sleep per night.  Quality meaning getting at least 20% of deep sleep and 15% of REM sleep. 2 apps I use to track my quality of sleep are the Sleep Cycle app and the Oura Ring app.  I recently purchased an oura ring and love it (no it’s not some weird mystical ring)! It tracks your quality of sleep and gives you a daily readiness score of how to handle your day. I highly recommend this.

Eat clean

I highly recommend the book “The Virgin Diet” written by J.J.Virgin, a highly sought speaker on health and nutrition. Similar to the paleo diet, it’s an elimination diet for 21 days cutting out the higher inflammatory-causing foods: gluten, dairy, sugar, corn, soy and peanuts. It is one of the most practical books I have ever read on not only how to do this, but the why behind what these foods do to our bodies to increase inflammation. I dare you to try it :).

Live clean

If you want to see what your home products are doing to you, download the app “think dirty.” You can scan the UPC on hand soap, hand sanitizers, makeup, shampoo, deodorant, shaving cream, body wash, toothpaste, detergents, etc. Once scanned, the app will give you a “dirty” chemical score of 0-10. It also provides healthy alternatives. I recently went on a tear and scanned all my household items, including my wife’s products (she wasn’t thrilled) and found at least 70% of the products I use are chalked full of chemicals I was not only putting on my body but allowing my kids to put on their bodies too. Just don’t throw away your spouse’s products until you find its clean replacements :).

Eat healthy fats

Fish oil has been known to decrease inflammation, and I also recommend putting 1 TBSP of unrefined coconut oil in your cup of coffee or hot tea in the morning. Your brain loves this too!

Take your supplements

I was astonished last week (and took photos) when I went to Walmart to find the cold and flu shelves completely empty only to find the supplement shelves two aisles over completely full!! Give the body what it needs to stay healthy. See bottom of the article for some recommendations.

Do not overtrain

While staying active and exercising boosts the immune system, overtraining can decrease your body’s much needed energy stores if it has to fight COVID-19.

Get chiropractic adjustments

It is well-documented that chiropractic adjustments can boost our immune system, allowing our bodies to fight viruses and other illnesses more effectively.

Finally, it’s important to heed the advice from the CDC and our government agencies to wash our hands, sanitize surfaces, practice social distancing, and stay at home if you’re under the weather. But I’m astonished that these additional, well-known healthy recommendations and tips I’ve listed aren’t more in the news spotlight.  Although washing your hands and social distancing are helpful, why just do these basics when you can really ramp up your immune system and give your body a better fighting chance.

The supplements I recommend are:

  • Vitamin C. Boosts the immune system
  • Vitamin D. Boosts the immune system. The best source is 20 minutes of sunshine daily
  • Zinc. Boosts the immune system.
  • Curcumin. An active ingredient in turmeric which has been shown to decrease inflammation.
  • Goldenseal. An herb that helps fight viral infections, especially upper respiratory infections. Great one to take if you test positive for COVID-19.
  • Deglycerrhizinated Licorice
  • Andrographis. An herb that inhibits cytokines very effectively.
  • Echinacea. An herb that reduces respiratory tract, viral, and bacterial infections by 20%.
  • Probiotics. The good gut bacteria that help to break down foods and boost your body’s natural defenses.

You can find most of these supplements online, at nutrition stores, or in my office as I use most of these daily.  One particular supplement I sell is called EHB that I give to my family and patients when they are under the weather.  It contains echinacea, deglycerrhizinated licorice, zinc, Vitamin C, and goldenseal.
